Finals Day 2012/13 Report

May 19th 2013

Denby Dale Tennis Club’s 2012 Championships finally took place eight months late: last year’s wet summer and the redevelopment of the courts meant that the matches had to be postponed until May 19th.

The Men’s Doubles and the Ladies Singles took place in the morning session. In the Ladies match Carly Hoyle and defending Champion, Karen Seddon, faced each. Karen, drew on her years of experience to wear down her younger opponent and won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

In the Men’s Doubles Kenny Giles and Mike Winch took on father and son, Steve and Robert Seddon. In the first set Steve and Robert won 6-2. In the second set Kenny and Mike won the set 6-2 to level the match. The deciding set was closely fought with Kenny and Mike just shading the match on the tie-break to become Men’s Doubles champions.

In the Ladies Doubles, Karen Seddon was partnered by Di Swaine and they took on Carly Hoyle and Deb Mortimer. The first set was won by Carly and Deb 6-2 but they lost the second set 6-0. The third set was closely fought with Karen and Di edging the set 6-4 to become the Ladies Doubles Champions.

The Men’s Singles was closely contested by Robert Seddon and Kenny Giles. Robert had the edge in the first set, taking it 6-3. However, Kenny upped his game in the second set taking it 6-5 in a tie-break. So, all to play for in the decider; despite some spectacular rear-guard action by Kenny he was unable to contain Robert who, by this time, was in full flow and Robert went on to win the third set 6-2 to become the Men’s Champion.

The final match of the day was the Mixed Doubles. Sarah Crozier and Robert Seddon faced Lauren Figg and Kenny Giles. Sarah and Robert won the first set easily 6-2. The second set was hotly contested with Lauren and Kenny winning on a tie-break 6-5. They maintained their momentum and won the deciding set 6-3 to claim the Championship.

Congratulations to all the finalists and to the event’s organisers: a successful event, albeit a little late. Trophies will be presented at the Grand Opening on Sunday 2 June when the courts will be officially opened at 11.30am. The courts will be available for play for members and non-members between 11am and 3pm.
